The Reiki Nurse

I am a registered nurse, licensed in California since 1981.  For several years, I was a volunteer Reiki practitioner at the Cancer Center at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, CA.  At the Center, I gave Reiki treatments to cancer patients and their family members.  Before long, many of the patients I treated week after week  affectionately began calling me "The Reiki Nurse."  I dedicate my work and this website to them. Those years of service at the Cancer Center touched my soul in ways that are beyond description.  During that time, I learned that it is an honor and privilege to be "The Reiki Nurse."

My First Experience with Reiki

Twelve years ago, I was sitting in a meeting of the American Holistic Nurses Association listening to a presentation on "Reiki Energy Therapy." I was an oncology nurse, and had heard about Reiki, but didn't know much about bio-field therapies or energy medicine  As the speaker talked about Reiki, my Western mind kept rebelling.  I was really very, very skeptical, finding it hard to believe that this Japanese "laying on of hands" therapy with the funny name could really do much to help anyone.

While I listened to the lecture, a Reiki practitioner stood behind me and gently placed her hands on my shoulders.  I was wary at first, but after a few moments, I felt her hands get very, very warm, and as they did, I began to feel completely relaxed and soothed.   Before long, I felt profoundly and impossibly nurtured. Then, something quite unexpected happened:  I began to weep.  Not gut wrenching sobs, but quiet tears. I was amazed and intrigued.  Something was happening, but I wasn't sure what.  Within a couple of minutes, the tears stopped flowing, and as I took a full deep breath in, and released it, I noticed feeling lighter, happier and at peace.  More astonishing was that this wonderful feeling lasted for weeks afterward.  Much of the anxiety and worry I'd been feeling simply had fallen away.  I felt cleansed.  And, I was hooked.

After that first experience of Reiki, I had to know more.  What had happened?  How did it happen?  Could I help others in this way, too?  And so, I embarked on an ever unfolding journey of personal growth and healing. Like many of you, I've faced many overwhelming, deeply painful personal challenges.  Today, I feel blessed and deeply grateful that Reiki introduced me to The Healer Within.  Reiki has changed my life.  It has helped me heal mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.   And, twelve years after that first session, I'm still in awe that something so simple can be so powerful.

Why I Love Reiki

My interest in  non-traditional approaches to health and well-being  grew during the years I worked with cancer and hospice patients. As I witnessed first-hand how complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies eased the pain and suffering my patients often endured, I became passionate about learning more and teaching others.

While I am trained and certified in several mind-body healing modalities,  I now limit my practice to Reiki.  I love Reiki, because it is simple, safe, and highly effective.  Of all of the CAM therapies I've used,  Reiki has been the most reliable and the most well-received.  People just love how Reiki treatments make them feel.   Reiki helps people live happier, healthier, more positive lives using a stress reduction technique that is uncomplicated, nearly effortless.

After practicing Reiki for about a year, I wanted to be able to teach it to others, so more people could benefit.  I became a certified Reiki  Master Teacher (RMT) in 2000. I did two RMT trainings that year: one with Barbara Rama Seltzer in Santa Barbara, CA,  and one with Francesca de Picciotto, MD, in Los Angeles, CA.

Teaching Reiki and  introducing people to the Healer Within has been one of the most gratifying and rewarding experiences of my life.  People are just so thrilled to discover how easy this powerful healing art  is to learn and to do.

I have taught Reiki to people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life, but I am particularly dedicated to teaching Reiki to other healthcare professionals.  In my world, Reiki would be prescribed as often as the latest, greatest drugs. I offer continuing education credit to nurses who take my Reiki workshops, and I hope to offer the same to other healthcare professionals in the future.       [Top]

My Reiki Lineage

Many people ask me about my "Reiki lineage."  At one time, lineage was considered vital in establishing one's Reiki credentials. I've been told that I have very good lineage, but don't take it too seriously.  I have learned that lineage alone is not as important as a Reiki Master's training, experience, expertise and dedication.  But, lineage matters to some people, so I'm glad to share it with you.  If you are curious about my Reiki family tree, click here.  [Top]
